1982
Promenade winners Mick Moore and Mike Elliot would have had a much harder
fight if 1981 winner Brian Simpson had not suffered 3 punctures after a first stage mishap at one of the Promenade's roundabouts. Mick Moore took full advantage of the situation powering the TR8 to victory. |
1984
Roger Matthews / Philip Suckling - Ford Escort Mk2 |
![]() |
Roger
Matthews and Phil Suckling swooped into the lead of the 1984 Promenade
Stages after John Price retired his Renault 5 Maxi Turbo on what was
his first visit to the Promenade. For those wondering there was no snow
on the Promenade but sadly we do not have a photo of Matthews on the
event. |
| 1986 John Price / Mike Bowen - Renault 5 Maxi Turbo 2 |
![]() |
John
Price returned in 1986 in a Renault 5 Maxi Turbo 2 and won in entertaining
style, with an endless succession of tail out slides that used up every
inch of the of the Promenade. Nearest challengers on the day were Kim
& Yvonne Mather in their twin engined Sirocco. |
1981
Brian Simpson / Dave Fisher - Talbot Sunbeam BDG |
![]() |
The
first ever Promenade Stages Rally was won by Brian Simpson in his 240
BHP Cosworth BDG powered Talbot Sunbeam. Brian's win at New Brighton
holds great value for him as it was his first ever outright victory.
Brian and his Sunbeam went on to win a total of 25 rallies before retiring
from the sport in 1986. |
1983
Ken Langley / Jean Langley - Ford Escort Mk2 |
![]() |
Husband and wife pairing Ken and Jean Langley had a fight all day long with the Opel Ascona of Andrew Ludlam. After a late charge the Langley Escort finally came off the better taking a well deserved victory. ITV F1 Commentator Tony Jardine competed on the 1983 event driving a Gp. 2 Chrysler Avenger. |
| 1985
Graham Hollis / Simon Gronow - Ford Escort Mk2 |
![]() |
A
very wet event saw Hollis's Escort chasing the Lotus Sunbeam of Iwan
Roberts for most of the day. As the rain got harder Roberts struggled
to put the Sunbeam's power down and fell into the clutches of Graham
Hollis and his Escort. |
